Stress help-Do Supplements Really Work?

There are different approaches to dealing with stress.  While a lot of people are aware of exercise and relaxation techniques, many do not know that supplements can really be helpful when it comes to managing stress.  It has been scientifically proven that stress can be managed in three different methods; medication, self management, and self-help. Supplements in this regard fall under medication.

Many natural substances and herbs are marked as medication for stress, but these products may not provide answers to life’s tension. They are only there as a relief. You only get a permanent solution for the type of stress you are facing when you are able to tackle the root cause of your stress, whether emotional, mental, or physical. Although some of these products can work when used for a short term, some others do have side effects that outweigh their benefits.

Thomas Lenz, an associate professor of Pharmacy at Creighton University, conducted a research on the effectiveness of supplements in treating stress. His findings were not very encouraging, but he actually discovered some that stood out. For short term remedy, lemon balm appears to be reasonably effective and equally safe.

This does not necessarily mean that other types of supplements are not useful. When combined with other remedies, some supplements are actually helpful, said Dr. Ashwin Mehta, a medical director and assistant professor at Miami’s University.   Below are some of the safest and most effective supplements for managing stress in the short term.

5-HTP

This is the main serotonin producing block in the body. It is known to prevent nervousness and uneasiness in the body, resulting to a general feeling of well being. Its supplements are derived from Griffonia plant.

Ademetionine (SAM-e)

This is yet another substance that is produced in the body. It performs the same function as 5-HTP by increasing the secretion of serotonin in the body.  Taking this supplement can reduce certain types of muscular pain.  Care should be taken when using this product because large doses may lead to irritability and anxiety.

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid  (GABA)

Usually, GABA is produced from glutamic acid within the body. When your body doesn’t produce enough GABA, it may result in anxiety because your brain’s neurotransmitters may not function effectively. The only side effect of this supplement is mild sleepiness. If this will bring any inconvenience for you, it is advised to take it at night.

Herbal supplements

Below are some common herbal supplements that really work for stress

Valerian root

Valerian root is excellent at treating sleep disorders and anxiety. To get the best result, it can be combined with St. John’s wort. However, studies have shown that high dosage of this supplement can cause blurred vision and changes in heart rhythm.

Lemon balm

This herbal supplement is part of the mint family. A lot of studies have indicated that Lemon balm can create feelings of calmness and improve mood. It is also safe and does not have any form of side effect even when taken for a long term.

Kava

Kava is another supplement known to reduce the level of anxiety one is feeling. It is obtained from the root of Kava plant. Care should be taken when using this supplement because there have been some reported cases of liver failure when taken in large quantity. It is recommended that patients should seek the advice of an expert in order to take the right dosage.
On a final note, it has been proven that supplements really do work for stress. However, if you intend taking them, know that they are varied in terms of content and quality. Therefore, you should seek the advice of a medical practitioner before taking any of these supplements.
